Despite what you might have heard, kidney dialysis doesn’t keep you from being active. You can still lead an exciting, meaningful, and mobile lifestyle even while receiving treatment. Luckily, there are plenty of amazing things to do around the Pacific Northwest that will be sure to get you out and about. You’ll have no trouble finding something that piques your interest and matches your energy level.
1. Biking the Burke Gilman Trail
Seattle is home to one of the country’s most accommodating and picturesque city bike trains. The roughly 19-mile Burke Gilman Trail winds throughout neighborhoods, landmarks, riverside parks, and bustling downtown hotspots. It actually follows an abandoned railroad track so you don’t have to worry about watching out for cars as the trail is completely dedicated to bikes. The trail is long but completely flat so you can easily choose the difficulty. And since every part of the trail is equally pretty, you don’t have to worry about missing anything.
2. Chasing Waterfalls in Columbia River Gorge
Ignore TLCs advice and head to Columbia River Gorge for some of the most impressive waterfalls in the entire PNW. The impressive Latourell Falls and the double-decker Multnomah Falls are accessible via a relatively moderate and flat walk. If you’re up for a hike, there are plenty of lush trails of varying lengths and difficulties. When you’ve reached your capacity for the day, hop in the car for an equally scenic drive around the gorgeous area.
3. Shell Fishing in Puget Sound
Embrace your inner fisherman by hunting for shellfish along the stunning beaches of Puget Sound. There is an abundance of shellfish including oysters and clams that are ripe for the picking. It’s a great way to get in some steps while enjoying a pleasant stroll on the coast. You’ll also have dinner figured out! Just make sure to check the Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations to see which types of shellfish and beaches are permitted.

4. Spelunking in Lava River Cave
Don’t worry. This is way less intense than it sounds. Lava River Cave is an ancient cave system that extends for a mile. Located near Bend, Oregon, this cave is perfect for beginners who want to explore the 80,000-year-old cavern without going full-blown spelunking. The tours are self-guided, but you’ll have no trouble getting around with railings and concrete steps making the path easier.
5. Birdwatching at Deschutes National Forest
If birdwatching is more your speed, you’ll want to check out Crane Prairie Reservoir which is hidden within the Deschutes National Forest in Oregon. You won’t have to venture far to see a plethora of majestic birds including bald eagles, osprey, Canada geese, and Sandhill cranes. There are plenty of elk and deer wandering around too. Don’t forget to take a camera and a pair of binoculars!
6. Exploring the PNW by kayak.
Kayaking is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the breathtaking nature of the PNW to see sites that would be impossible on foot. Some of the most popular places to kayak in Washington are Steelhead Falls, Klickitat River, and Husum Falls. If you’re in Oregon, check out Beaver Creek, Waldo Lake, or Estacada Lake. More adventurous kayakers could head to San Juan islands for a chance to kayak with Orca whales and other iconic PNW wildlife.
